263Remember last year’s Canada-esque winter? The neverending snowfall, the massive dirty gray piles that blocked our view of shopping center parking lots… the power outages around the tri-state area? As we enjoy these last dwindling days of summery weather, our thoughts turn to the next New Jersey winter with no small amount of dread. Wondering how long we’ll have to endure bitter-cold nights; snow delay calls that come at the last minute; outrageously high heating bills; cabin fever with kids and pets; and endless shoveling shoveling shoveling?

If the Farmer’s Almanac is right, and we end up with an equally frigid as (or worse than) winter as last year, we may be waiting for quite some time before spring gardening season 2015 becomes reality. Remember last spring, how long before our May gardens took to really begin heating up and flourishing?

4 Seasons Lawn Care and GardenBedsNJ.com are thinking ahead to solutions for the big spring thaw of 2015. What do you want to be doing once those crocuses finally come poking out of the snow? Hacking away at your brick-solid garden beds that will still need the earth turned over, compost added, and all the other necessary prepwork before you can actually begin planting? Or, excitedly drawing up those garden plans, knowing that as soon as the ground is workable you can head right out to an already-prepped garden bed and begin your early spring plantings of snow and snap peas, turnips, radishes, cabbages, broccoli, lettuce, spinach, etc.?

Yes – the solution for your future spring garden is here: 4 Seasons Lawn Care is taking FALL orders for garden bed installation. Right now in September and October (maybe even November?), we can build cedar wood garden bed frames; add organic soil and compost; create gravel pathways, and install a wire fence to keep critters out. We’ll get your garden beds all ready to be worked; cover them with straw or mulch for the cold winter months… and, once warmer weather arrives after our terrible NJ winter, you’ll be all set to start gardening without all the backbreaking toil, mess and fuss.

To discuss your gardening plans for 2015 and get your garden beds installed now, contact Mike Hyde at mikehyde@4seasonslawns.com or call 908 783 5733.

In the summer, we posted some pictures of a work-in-progress grape arbor rebuild and garden bed install job we did in Montclair, NJ. Our customer was kind enough to send after pictures of the garden and patio once they had added some cool features like plants, flowers, lighting, a gravel path and a cold frame. Looks really great!

Two years ago we installed garden beds for a customer in Northampton County, PA. She was kind enough to take pictures – not only just after planting her garden vegetables and herbs, but once again just this past month for a follow-up look at what became of her garden. We’re happy to see that everything looks lush and beautiful. Thanks, Mrs. R, for sending in the pictures and for your business.

weber4At the moment, I am gazing angrily glaring out my window at a blanket of snow, with more due to fall for the remainder of the day and into tomorrow morning. Even so: I’m eagerly looking ahead to warmer temps, those first crunches of shovel blade into thawing earth – turning over the garden beds, and the start of spring!

Just because everything is frozen over doesn’t mean we can’t dream a little, right? In fact – cold days that keep us mostly-indoors are the perfect opportunity to draw up those garden plans that we won’t have time for once things heat up in March.

For anyone who was not aware, 4 Seasons Lawn Care does custom-built garden bed frames for those who understand the benefits of raised bed gardening. In fact – we have an entire website discussing this topic in detail, with helpful hints for the NJ Zone 6 gardener. Learn all about it and get some organic gardening inspiration at http://gardenbedsnj.com

If you live in Hunterdon, Warren (NJ) or Northhampton (PA) counties, why not pull out your graph paper and pencil and leftover seeds from gardening seasons past. Start planning your garden beds today! In fact… we are booking orders for garden bed plans starting now – January, 2014. Work will begin as soon as weather permits – but we are happy to take your call and talk about your vision for a NJ garden that is both attractive and prolific!

2013-01-31 14.47.32If you live in an area where there are lots of deer, you’ll probably want to have a fence around your garden. You could go with a cheap-and-easy wire fence… but for those who prefer a more aesthetically pleasing yard, 4 Seasons Lawn Care offers slip board fence installations at your request.

The photo to the left is of a recent installation we did in Flemington, NJ – it is partially completed in the picture.

A fence height of 4 feet is recommended to keep deer out. Deer won’t normally jump into an enclosed area, so as long as the fence is higher than the tallest deer, there’s no need to worry.

If you live in or around Hunterdon County, NJ and are thinking of planting a garden this spring, the best time to have your fence installed is over the next several months. Weather permitting, 4 Seasons Lawn Care is now quoting garden fence installations, garden bed frame construction and delivery, compost tumbler delivery, and spring cleanups.

We are also creating our lawn cutting schedule for spring, summer and fall 2013. If you are not already a customer and want to get on the list, email mikehyde@4seasonslawns.com. Or, call Mike Hyde at 908 783 5733.
